Building a Kaimerra

chi·me·ra | \ kī-ˈmir-ə, kə- \ n.

1 a, capitalized : a fire-breathing she-monster in Greek mythology having a lion's head, a goat's body, and a serpent's tail

b : an imaginary monster compounded of incongruous parts

2 : an illusion or fabrication of the mind, especially : an unrealizable dream

3 : an individual, organ, or part consisting of tissues of diverse genetic constitution

As a word with such vivid mythical and scientific meanings, the word chimera resonates with us deeply and provides what we feel to be a pretty apt description for what we're working on at Kaimerra: ways to transmute and transform existing data and connections into something greater than the sum of their parts—something new and awesome. As for being “an unrealizable dream,” we have the tech knowledge to make it happen.

Kaimerra’s mission is to break down the walls that separate the myriad universes that we inhabit, allowing people to build their own connections between games, social media presences, and IRL spaces.

Here’s what that means at time of writing:

  • In many online games, data like player location is transmitted to a central server. We’re able to access that information (via API) and transmute it into something easily understood in different spaces. We've enabled interactions between Minecraft, Terraria and a simple web interface, creating a shared space where players can see one another and collaborate on a build.

  • We’re experimenting with using machine learning to reinterpret and enhance our virtual spaces.

  • We’re creating an overlay system so that users can communicate between platforms in real time—for example, bridging the gap between your Discord account and your Minecraft world.

  • We’re building a software development kit (SDK) that anyone will be able to use to create new features and experiences

What could those look like?

  • Going into battle triggers your “Battle Music” playlist in your music app of choice

  • Enemies that you defeat re-populate in your friend’s game

  • While you stream on Twitch, your viewers spawn monsters or drop support items in real time

We want Kaimerra to be an ever-expanding possibility space that complements and enhances the ways that users interact, communicate, and share.

We want to provide the means for players to create, collaborate on, and customize accessibility features for the games that they love, coming together to build something bigger and better.

Who is “we,” exactly?

A small team of developers and creative folks [bios coming soon!] Kaimerra is a spark of inspiration that we grew into a full-time project of our own. Whatever forms Kaimerra will take, we know that we are in the early stages of creating something amazing—and we'd love for you to come with us on our journey.

Follow us on Twitter, join our Discord, and keep watching this space.

High fives,

Kaimerra.
